Ma Maison

2nd time at this restaurant located in
Parco Bugis Junction.
Ma Maison (
maa meh-zong) serves a cuisine of Japanese and Western fusion...but basically, i think the food is more jap than western. wad bing had was a good example of the fusion though...wad i had was a good example of jap.
the 1st time i went to Ma maison...it gave me the impression of a very cosy cottage house. the frm the dim lightings...to the furniture and shelves, even the table cloths are all v country-like. like i told the gals, it'd be very ez to convert this restaurant into a slightly high-end one. juz change the service style...the way the waiters dress...maybe upgrade the menu a lil...and voila! but well, high-end restaurants appeal to a totally different group of ppl...those who probably dun shop at Bugis much.
right. back abt the food. shant talk abt what i had on my previous visit. this time...for starters, i had this
Smoked Salmon thingy...i shld bring along a notebook to take down the full name nxt time. argh! din take a pic of it though...attacked it before i remembered abt the photo. anyways...i quite like it. the whole combination of salmon, lemon juice and this strange tasting sauce made the smoked salmon not as salty as it normally it. karen din favour the flavour though.

for main course, i ordered a
Tonkatsu Curry , coz' josh had it the last time, and it looked really good. hm...i rarely order tonkatsu or curry when i dine at japanese restaurants. so apart frm saying tt i thot the curry is not sweet enough for jap curry...i think the tonkatsu is really quite well done. know how it feels to be biting into something tt's deep-fried and super duper oily? haha...thank God eating the tonkatsu din feel like that AT ALL. yeapers...due to lack of knowledge in the area of tonkatsu and curry...tt's abt all i can say. hahaha...stay tuned for the entries of the others and their first experiences a la Ma Maison=)

cartel's value-for-money lunchies!!
Wednesday, August 17, 2005
hohoho! seems like eups will be the one blogging abt lunchies on tues=) anyways...we gathered at Cineleisure's Cafe Cartel for its really cheap lunch. how cheap is it u say? $7.50 nett for a 3-course meal!!! however, main course limited to 2 choices. and all 4 of us took the same thing -Breaded Fish with Orange Lemon Sauce. personally find the thyme a tad too overpowering...luv the sauce though...think i was having sauce as main course and the fish as a complement. bah~ soup's good too...suspect might be campbells. ice cream's normal. might be walls. hahahaha...as if i'll really know. hmm....still prefer sizzler's though it's a tad more ex. p/s: kc! shall we go tony roma's on ur bday?!

yaho! wellwellwell, eups went to Sizzler @ suntec with kc and hannah todae for lunch too...and she ordered a Spicy Chicken main course and yeap, had also the complimentary drink and salad bar. walloped a bowl of Cream of mushroom for starters due to extreme hunger...soup @ sizzler is definitely one of my favourites...albeit a tad too thick for my liking. am not gonna comment on the toast tt kc's totally in luv with...coz' i have zero knowledge in wad makes a good piece of toast. bahhh~the main course is pretty good. the portion ain't too huge...which i think is good coz' the salad bar is juz too overwhelming. besides...too much grilled chicken makes it quite 腻, coz' of the grease. so, am satisfied with portion served. will not recommend Spicy Chicken to bing...since she doesnt take spicy food. it's not exactly chilli-hot but still, the fiery index is definitely there for bing. quite yummy so for those who take spicy stuff, go ahead and try it. no guarantee tt u'll like it like i did though~
dinner was a la Fish n Co. @ suntec! this time around, eups ordered this Peri Peri Prawns (butterflied, grilled & served with peri peri sauce.) and it was really good! the peri peri sauce was a lil like thousand island with a lighter flavour...and it went quite well with the prawns. at least i think it's my kinda food=) yes yes...i know Fish n Co. is known for its splendid fish and chips, which i personally find quite nice too. the thing abt fish and chips (not those in UK which are damn nice with the vinegar and all) is tt after a while, the grease gets to u. u FEEL the oily-ness of it. well, tt din deter my fren aka
qingqing frm ordering it. anyways, i took a piece of it and it was good, as usual. haha...it's always nice to share food=)p/s: sorrie i forgot abt taking pics @ sizzler. was telling kc i brought a camera somemore...-sigh- old and senile.

Sizzler @ Suntec
As the sisters already know, I
love Sizzler, though not for their supposedly well-known steak. It's their salad bar I'm crazy over. And the bread. Simply divine.
Anyhow, today I had their set lunch, which was quite worth the price -- a main (out of a variety of choices, which is good), a complementary drink, and all-you-can-eat access to the salad bar, which apart from having a wide variety of veggies and salad dressings, also includes soup, chips, pasta, fruits, and ice-cream.
I chose the
Sirloin Steak with Mushroom Sauce as a main, medium done. It was all right, I supposed, but nothing to rave about. Served with fries.
The
BREAD, however, still tasted as great as before. I wonder how they prepared it. There was definitely butter, and I suspect some cheese, and it's simply so good -- nicely toasted (and served hot and crispy!) and aesthetically pleasing.
I tried their
Chicken Noodle Soup which is basically a cream of chicken with potatoes and bits of noodle-pasta. I think its taste is above average.
Then I headed to the very loved salad bar and whipped up a plate full of crispy roman lettuce and cheery tomatoes, topped with corn and bacon bits. I drizzled the salad with the special in-house
sesame vinaigrette and added a dash of lemon. Soooooo goooooood. I love the salad to bits. The veggie were fresh, and when tossed with bacon bits and corn gave it a heavy favour such that the salad would not be too bland. I personally love the sesame vinaigrette because it's fragrant and gave the salad a tangy taste. Like I said, very gooooood. Next time I head to Sizzler, I might just pay for the access to the salad bar because clearly I favour that over their main courses. And given the sheer amount made available at the salad bar, it will be no less than sinful indulgence. So much to eat, not scare never eat enough. :D
Ice-cream was shared with Hannah. Share the guilt mah. And the ice-cream was surprisingly good. Usually I wouldn't bother getting the ice-cream because ice-cream is just ... well, that. But the one served at Sizzler is soft and not too sweet. I like.
All in all, it's a very pleasant experience eating at Sizzler. The staff was very attentive, and the food was served super fast. We had just finished our soup and bread, after which I went for the salad, and when I returned the food was already there on the table! Hannah came in late, and even though we'd placed food orders for her, I did not order her drink. I was expecting to have to get a waiter's attention to place her order, but the waiter came by himself because he
knew that there's still one complementary drink yet to be served at our table. That's how good the service was.
Sizzler @ Suntec, definitely one of my favourite restaurants.

Sorry ah, a bit delayed response, but this is important news for NUS students
The Japanese food at NUS Arts canteen used to be quite all right. One of my preference when eating at Arts actually. But yesterday I had the
Teriyaki Chicken and Salmon combo, and it's KENA SAI. There's no other words for it, honestly.
The miso soup tastes strange. I didn't know you can actually go wrong with miso soup, but apparently life sucks, things liddat does happen. The miso soup doesn't have the usual saltish-sweet taste to it. Instead it tastes rather bland, and leaves a bitter after-taste. Very, very bad. Like stale water.
Then the teriyaki salmon. I would advise not to order salmon dishes anywhere unless you are sure that it's a quality restaurant that serves fresh salmon, because not-fresh salmon is not good. Makes me want to puke, but I pay money already, so I die also shove the salmon down my throat, all the while thinking of the benefits of Omega 3.
The teriyaki chicken is all right, but the sauce! Hmm, somehow tastes different from usual. A little too salty such that it leaves a bitter after-taste, if you know what I'm saying.
Then the fruit salad! Last time their vegetable salad I like very much one. One reason why I favour the Japanese food stall even though their food ain't all that fantastic is that they give healthy serving of food. Got salad, got fruit, got rice, got meat. Healthy dining I like. But the fruit salad, the apples hor, not crunchy one. SOGGY. And then there are some unidentifiable but hopefully edible elements in the salad, and I tried hard not to think about it.
All in all, bad lunch food. Made me feel queasy the rest of the time.
***
Okay, dinner. The Coffee Club ah. Open menu so many 'not available' sticker sticking all over the place. They think menu sticker book, issit? Haiyo. Difficult time making choices like everyone else, and I had the bad-lunch-stomach to deal with on top of it. The only thing that made up for it is the ambience and seats at the restaurant. Comfy and I like the view out of the glass windows. Other than that, service was bad. They didn't fill our glasses, and when asked to, took an unecessarily long time. Getting the crew attention also very difficult. If you are the impatient type, may possibly start frothing at the mouth, so don't say I didn't warn you.
My dinner pick was Bangers and Mashes. The kind of food that couldn't go wrong ah. Sausages and mash potato woh. Quite ready-made food. But Karen say first, this type of dinner not good for health, also not nutritious. Because sausages are processed-food, got chemicals, don't eat too much.
Anyhow, I enjoyed the dinner. There are three different types of saussages served, and while it's not within my expertise to tell you which three types exactly, I can at the very least tell you that one oozes cheese. Very creamy, and tastes well with the sausage meat. But I think three sausages a bit too much, and I got a bit sick of the saltish-taste of sausages by the time I reached the third piece. The mash potatoes were okay. Wished they served it with salad though. It would help to neutralise the heavy taste of the sausages.
Speaking of salad, the ones they served to Ghim and Ting hor, damn nice leh! I think it's the best salad dressing I've ever tasted -- sweet, tangy, and light. *thumbs up* I might just go back for the salad.
And with that, we've come to the end of Karen's first food review. Till next time. Thank you for your attention.

wellwellwell...my post abt yday's dinner is kinda late but since i'll be posting again abt my popiah dinner later...thot i'd juz write a bit now.
right...eups tried to look for a pic of the "rosemary chicken" she had @ coffee club yday...but oh well, cldnt find the website (i suspect they dun have one...sheesh) and so, voila! no pictures. anyways...back to the food. loved the potato wedges but then again, wat can go wrong with ready-made-to-deepfry-food? erh...i wouldnt say the same for bing's fries though. they were really quite hard. the chicken itself was kinda nice...juz a tad on the oily side and it got to me towards the end of my meal. luckily the portion wasnt too big...the grease would have raised my cholesterol level by a 100%. haha...juz exaggerating.
drink of the day was iced mocha vanilla...my regular drink whenever i go to The Coffee Connection. ting mentioned tt TCC and coffee club has merged...so i thot i'd give it a go. still tastes the same...juz tt they din give me enuff HERSHEY'S CHOCOLATE SAUCE. man...and they had like a whole display of them together with the booze. dun ask me why they placed them together...i was abt to order a bottle of HERSHEY'S CHOCOLATE SAUCE. bahh!!! oh...but i hope the merger/acquisition/wadeva will not affect the array of drinks tt TCC offers. they've got these really pretty drinks which i've yet to try so...until then...-prays for retainment of varieties-
ok...am done for now. till tonite~ eat well ppl! it's NATIONAL DAY!
p/s: hey sisters...r we really gonna juz blog abt food here? btw...check this out! http://www.melovefood.blogspot.com

Aiyo, why I last one?
Not my fault, okay. Eups sent the invite to my non-existent hotmail account, and it got lost in cyberspace. Or else I sure first one! I blog queen can blog several times a day, don't play play!
In any case, I also don't know introduction for what lar. Just know that I'm human, I eat, and I will tell you if I think the food is nice or not. Amongst us, I think my QC (quality control) most credible one. So if I say the food not nice you better believe me. Later you still karching itchy go eat despite warning, then have to perform projectile vomiting, not my fault. You only have yourself to blame.
And then, if I say the food is good, you also better go eat. Don't doubt my taste.
School's starting tomorrow for three of us, so perhaps can start from 'home' hor. In any case, I will be having NUS food on most weekdays, so might as well write about them.
